With a range of business critical applications, enterprise grade storage requirements and more, the matter of comparing cloud service providers can become quite difficult.

While of course there are many different parts to selecting the correct cloud service providers, it is good to benchmark them against core components.

Rather than doing so for all providers, whereby data could be incorrect from one week to the next, we have created a 10-item checklist.

These questions will still be relevant if the providers change how they conduct themselves, and will hopefully make the job of selection that bit simple - they should also in cloud readiness.

For further reading, here is the complete guide for Azure - Azure benefits as a service provider. With Microsoft Azure being one of the core solutions considered by enterprises, we hope this is useful to those who need a hand with this important decision.

Why is the guide useful?

With the topic of cloud computing getting closer to the boardroom, there is a great weight of priority being placed of cloud features.

Don’t get us wrong, some of the features are incredibly important and valuable, but you to need ensure that the cloud service providers are aligned to your essential requirements.

We hope this guide will allow you to compare the types of matters that can frequently be overlooked, or in some cases, only reviewed at the end, at which point changing strategy will seem very time consuming.

It is through understanding elements such as the cloud roadmaps of heavyweights like Microsoft, Amazon and Google that allow you to solve for business objectives, data centre transformation and successful digital transformation.

Of course there are going to be questions that you see as a higher priority to your organisation, so make sure to comment below.

The questions: comparing cloud service providers

Without further or do, here is both a Slideshare and a written version or our ten questions:

1. Is your cloud service provider fast enough?
2. Are they as agile as you?
3. Do they have a global reach?
4. How open is their development environment?
5. Do they have a delivery pipeline?
6. What does their disaster recovery system look like?
7. How flexible is their expenditure system?
8. What does their security look like?
9. Are they compliant?
10. Can it be deployed anywhere?

It is important to note that these questions are not placed in any specific order. Equally, they may not all be as relevant to your business.

Take question 4 for example: some of our clients choose certain platforms just because of its suit to their development needs.

This guide also isn’t to be compared on a numerical scale of 1-10. We understand that there are many different parts to each question, which need to be considered, reviewed, and in many cases, spoken through with each service provider.

Next steps

While we have previously noted that we have undertaken this exercise for Microsoft Azure, you may wish to do the same for different platforms.

When you have done so we recommend that your start to critically examine how cloud is used in your business, and whether any cloud migrations needs to be considered.
